Enterprise Strategy Group Report 2012 - IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.3

Enterprise Strategy Group Report 2012 - IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.3

Deduplication, Remote Site Recovery, and Scalability
By Tony Palmer, Senior Lab Analyst

ESG Lab Validation Highlights:
- TSM 6.3 progressive incremental backup, combined with client- and source-side data deduplication technology provided an impressive 95% data reduction factor (more than 19:1) over just 11 days of backups.
- DB2 continues to provide an enterprise-class, scalable back-end for TSM. ESG Lab confirmed that TSM 6.3 can scale to more than four billion objects under management while providing higher performance and more functionality.
- TSM 6.3 offers hot TSM server disaster recovery, and demonstrated the ability to replicate deduplicated data sets from a live TSM server to a hot standby server. TSM 6.3 provided seamless and transparent restores for clients after failover.
- TSM 6.3 showed many improvements to ease of use and management. The Tivoli Integrated Portal (TIP) provided a common repository for all TSM interfaces, with a single pane of glass for management of an enterprise TSM environment. ESG Lab also tested automated client deployment, with no scripting or manual commands needed.
Issues to Consider
- Under Tivoli Storage Manager each source TSM server can replicate to one other TSM server. While a replication scenario is supported where multiple TSM source servers all replicate to the same target (many to one), a one-to-many configuration, with a source server replicating to multiple targets, is not supported in TSM 6.3.

The Big Truth:
ESG Lab performed hands-on testing of key TSM 6.3 features to demonstrate and audit its capabilities. ESG Lab tested client-side data deduplication to understand the value of this capacity optimization technique in combination with deduplicated storage pools and progressive incremental backups over time. ESG Lab found that the two technologies (deduplication and progressive incremental backups) working in concert were able to achieve 90% data reduction after just six incremental backups and 95% reduction after ten backups. Replication is also now fully integrated with deduplication, optimizing bandwidth for disaster recovery.

Solution Overview:

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Software provides centralized, automated storage management and data protection. It can help data center managers, storage administrators and IT managers improve service levels, reduce costs, and mitigate risks through simplified & automated data management capabilities.

TSM enables you to protect your organization’s data from failures and other errors by storing backup, archive, space management and bare-metal restore data, as well as compliance and disaster-recovery data in a hierarchy of offline storage. Because it is highly scalable, Tivoli Storage Manager can help protect computers running a variety of different operating systems, on hardware ranging from notebooks to mainframe computers and connected together through the Internet, wide area networks (WANs), local area networks (LANs) or storage area networks (SANs). It uses Web-based management, intelligent data move-and-store techniques and comprehensive policy-based automation that work together to help increase data protection and potentially decrease time and administration costs.

Tivoli Storage Manager
Family – a comprehensive solution
  • Backup / Restore
  • Archive / Retrieve
  • Continuous Data Protection (CDP)
  • Disaster Recovery
  • Virtual Server protection
  • Hierarchical Space Management
  • Application Protection
  • Database Protection
  • Bare Machine Recovery
  • Robust Remote Office Recovery
The IBM Advantage:

IBM is the world's leading provider of efficient and scalable data protection software – our patents for storage products are more than all of our storage competitors combined. We offer end to end data management solutions.
  • TSM is the best storage solution in the market, with over 18 years of experience, 20000+customers, protecting over a million computers every day, supporting the widest range of operating systems and storage devices.
  • TSM FastBack has a unique value proposition which no other competitor is able to provide; clients will be able to recover any amount of data within a couple of minutes, from any previous point-in-time, following almost any type of data loss. No matter what type of outage, the client system can be fully operational within an hour. Competing solutions like AVAMAR cannot match the speed of FastBack in terms of recoverability; they focus on backup although they are positioned as a recovery solution as well. Near-instant recovery of application servers using FastBack is an IBM exclusive. Only NetApp can come close to this, but their solution is more expensive than ours, and works only with NetApp hardware. IBM currently enjoys a strong partnership with NetApp.
  • TSM for Virtual Environments provides advanced protection and flexible recovery options for VMware vSphere virtualized server systems, with automatic discovery and protection of new virtual machines (VMs), non-disruptive backups of VMs, and near-instant restore of Windows and Linux VM disk volumes.
In the data protection and recovery market, IBM TSM is the only vendor solution with share growth over each of the last 5 years. Symantec has greater overall distributed market share, but it’s split among its enterprise NetBackup and SMB/ROBO Backup Exec, and they have been losing market share to IBM, EMC and Commvault.
Tivoli Storage Manager has been an innovation leader in helping organizations protect, retain and assure availability of their most important assets for almost 20 years.
  • 1st disk-to-disk backup solution
  • 1st to provide support for both disk and tape
  • 1st to use hierarchical storage management for offline storage
  • 1st to offer a fully incremental approach for backup window management
  • Industry’s broadest range of OS and HW platforms from laptop to mainframe
  • TSM is Tivoli’s #1 selling product in 17 of 21 vertical markets
  • TSM’s built-in deduplication functionality is best in class - designed for both backup and recovery
  • 20,000+ loyal customers
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack and TSM for Virtual Environments are the latest examples of IBM’s continued investment in delivering highly competitive, innovative solutions to our clients’ data protection and recovery challenges.

Unlike competing solutions in the market that are traditionally backup products, IBM TSM and TSM FastBack focus on recovery capabilities. Together, IBM storage management solutions have the unique ability to meet client needs while leveraging their existing investments in IT & deliver faster ROI.
TSM Offers:
  • Unique progressive incremental data capture technology that significantly improves performance and resource efficiencies.
  • Simplified Deployment: quick installation now requires 30 % less disk. TSM 6 can manage more data with fewer TSM servers – up to 4 billion objects per TSM Server; much less complicated than competitive solutions (no media servers)
  • Simplified Management: use of automation and user interface makes TSM management easy; no database admin skills required, more reliable back up & recovery, high availability of data – unlike other solutions that require servers to be offline, TSM servers need not be taken ‘offline’ for database repair actions.
  • Enhanced Scalability: IBM DB2® database technology is fully integrated to simplify management and doubles capacity from previous versions. Performance and availability are also greatly enhanced. Competing solutions in the market need additional servers to handle additional workload.
  • Near Instant recovery of data with TSM FastBack, reducing recovery time for any amount of data to just a couple of minutes rather that the hours or days that other solutions require. TSM FastBack can minimize data loss risk to near-zero level.
  • Built-in reporting and near real-time monitoring improve visibility and reduce management costs.
  • Advanced data protection and flexible recovery for virtualized server environments including VMware vSphere.
Product-specific differentiators for TSM 6 include:
